CHP Air Unit Locates Lincoln Stolen in Car Jacking, Officers Arrest Suspect After Car & Foot Chase

On April 28, 2012, California Highway Patrol “Air 71” flight officers began to pick up the silent LoJack homing signal from a 2003 Lincoln LS reported stolen during a carjacking to the Simi Valley Police Department just over an hour earlier. Following the directional and signal strength cues from the LoJack Police Tracking Computer installed in their aircraft, the flight officers tracked and located the Lincoln LS in the City of Ventura.
CHP-Moorpark Station and Ventura Police Department patrol units responded to the location. While the officers were monitoring the Lincoln, a suspect drove the vehicle to a local fast food restaurant. While officers were awaiting backup, the suspect drove from the location and entered the 101 Freeway, traveling southbound. Officers attempted a felony traffic stop, but the suspect failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued. The suspect stopped the vehicle on the 101 Freeway, south of the Kanan Road off-ramp and attempted to flee on foot. He was quickly apprehended and taken into custody on auto theft-related charges without further incident. Detectives from the Simi Valley Police Department are conducting the carjacking investigation.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Lincoln LS at the owner’s request in December 2007.
