On May 9, 2012, the owner of a 2003 Mercedes Benz parked and locked his vehicle on the street where he lives in Lindenhurst, Long Island, in Suffolk County. When he returned for it, he found it missing and immediately called the New York Police Department’s 5th Precinct, Suffolk County. NYPD officers verified the theft and had the Mercedes’ information entered into the state and federal crime computers, thereby automatically activating the LoJack transponder concealed in the Mercedes.

A short while later, the Police of the Brooklyn South Auto Larceny Unit picked up the Mercedes’ silent homing signal on the LoJack Police Tracking Computers installed in their patrol vehicles. Following the directional and audible signals on the LoJack Trackers, the officers tracked the signal to a residential area of the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. There, they located the Mercedes, parked in the driveway of a private house. They staked the vehicle out for a short while, but when one returned for the vehicle, they approached the house. The owner appeared at the door and stated that he found the vehicle in the driveway when he returned home from work. He did not know who owned it, but suggested that his son may have put it in the driveway. Police questioned the son, who denied any knowledge of the vehicle being stolen, but thought that it belonged to a friend of his. The police were not able to locate the friend, and turned the investigation over to the Suffolk County Auto Squad.

Detectives from the Auto Squad came to Brooklyn and towed the undamaged vehicle back to Suffolk, where the theft had occurred. At this time the investigation is being continued by the Suffolk County Auto Squad.
