Honda Accord Stolen in LA Car Jacking Recovered in Minutes; Suspect Arrested After Chase

On February 23, 2012, the owner of a 2000 Honda Accord arrived home and parked his car in front of his home. As he was sitting inside his vehicle talking on his cell phone, a male suspect approached him, holding a hammer, demanding his car keys and that he get out of the car. The victim complied, in fear for his life, and watched the suspect drive off in his car. He then contacted the Los Angeles East LA Sheriff’s Department and reported the incident.
After the responding deputies verified the incident, they contacted their station and had the vehicle entered into the California Stolen Vehicle System and national stolen vehicle database (NCIC). This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder hidden inside the Honda.
20 minutes later, deputies from East LA picked up the silent LoJack code from the stolen Honda. Following the cues on the LoJack Tracking Computer installed in their patrol vehicle, the deputies tracked the vehicle and located it, being driven by a male matching the description of the robber. They followed the vehicle to an apartment building, where the driver pulled into the driveway and quickly fled the vehicle on foot. Assisting deputies soon located the suspect and arrested him without further incident.
A search of the Honda resulted in the recovery of the weapon and the victim’s cell phone. Positive identification was made by the victim at the scene. The recovered Honda was released back to the victim, along with his personal property. The suspect was booked in the LA County Jail on multiple felonies, including Car Jacking.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in this Honda in September 1999.
