The owners of a 1998 Honda Civic contacted the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department to report that their vehicle was stolen by unknown suspects. Deputies verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Honda Civic.

A short while later officers from the Los Angeles Police Department Topanga Division picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Honda Civic with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officers tracked the Honda from Desoto Ave and Victory. They noted the Honda was traveling faster than they were and called for assistance from Air-16 who had acquired the signal. Air 16 relayed they had spotted a vehicle matching the description of the stolen Honda in the area of Valley Circle and the 101 Freeway and followed the vehicle observing it enter the freeway then exit at Fallbrook. The Honda reached Crispi Street where the suspect stopped and fled from the vehicle. Assisting officers from the Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) responded locating the suspect who was hiding by a wall taking him into custody without further incident. The suspect was later booked for grand theft auto. The Honda was later released to the victim.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Honda Civic in July 1998 at Scott Robinson Honda in Torrance, California.
