LoJack® System Helps San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department Recover Stolen Honda Accord

The owners of a 1997 Honda Accord contacted the Riverside Community College Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen by unknown suspects from the campus parking area. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Honda Accord.
A short while later a deputy from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department Fontana Station picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Honda with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the deputy determined that the Honda was possibly on the 10 Freeway and directed another unit to cover the ramp at the Cedar off ramp westbound and she would cover the eastbound ramp. The deputy entered the freeway and noted the signal was behind her vehicle. The deputy pulled to the side of the freeway and waited until the stolen Honda passed her. She then, with the assistance of the other deputy, affected a felony traffic stop. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident or damage to the Honda. According to the deputy, the suspect was on felony probation and had just been released from jail three weeks prior after serving time for stealing a motor vehicle. The suspect was booked on felony vehicle theft as well as probation violations.
The LoJack® System was installed in the Honda Accord in August 1997 at Weir Canyon Honda in Anaheim, California.
