LoJack System Helps Santa Clara County Regional Auto Theft Task Force Recover Stolen 2015 Hyundai Accent

The owner of a 2015 Hyundai Accent contacted the San Jose Police Department to report that their vehicle had been stolen. The owner advised he was sitting in his parked Hyundai at East Hedding Street near North 13th Street in the early morning hours when he was approached by a male armed with a handgun. The suspect robbed the owner of his belongings and took his Hyundai.

The San Jose PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Hyundai Accent.

A short while later, investigators from the Santa Clara County Regional Auto Theft Task Force picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Hyundai Accent with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the investigators tracked the Hyundai to the area of White Road and Alum Rock Avenue. A surveillance was initiated, and the investigators followed the stolen Hyundai driven by a female to the downtown area of San Jose. They then followed the Hyundai to the vicinity of Alum Rock Avenue and I-680, where sufficient police units were able to get into position to conduct a traffic stop. The female driver, a male passenger, and juvenile all attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended. The female driver who was well known to the officers from prior arrests and the adult male passenger were booked for vehicle theft/possession of a stolen vehicle. The juvenile was identified as a run away from Alameda County and was detained to be returned to their guardian.

The stolen Hyundai was recovered and was towed to be processed for forensic evidence prior to be returned to the owner. The investigation is continuing to determine the identity of the original robbery/car-jacking suspect.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Hyundai Accent in April 2017 for Hertz Car Sales in Santa Clara, California.
