The owner of a 2006 BMW X5 contacted the Tempe Police Department to report that their vehicle had been stolen from the parking lot of their apartment complex. The owner advised that her purse had been stolen a couple days earlier and the keys to the BMW were inside the purse.

The Tempe PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the BMW.

Twenty-five minutes later, deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department and officers from the Phoenix Police Department picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen BMW with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officers and deputies tracked the BMW to the area of 48th Street and South Point Parkway in Phoenix.

The stolen BMW was located approximately four miles from where it was stolen from. The BMW was unoccupied and parked on a side street. No suspects were observed with the BMW or in the area. The Phoenix PD officers recovered the BMW in good condition and processed it for evidence. The BMW was impounded for safe keeping and later returned the owner.

The LoJack® System was installed in the BMW X5 in April 2006 at BMW of San Diego in California.
