The owners of a 2002 Hyundai Sonata contacted the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department to report that their vehicle had been stolen along with fifteen pounds of explosives in the trunk of the vehicle.

The Maricopa County SD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Hyundai.

A short while later, the helicopter and officers from the Phoenix Police Department picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Hyundai with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officers tracked the Hyundai to the area of 27th Avenue and Deer Valley Road in north Phoenix.

The Phoenix PD officers located the stolen Hyundai occupied and followed it until additional units arrived to the area. A high risk felony stop was conducted and the female driver was taken into custody. The area was secured while the Phoenix PD bomb squad responded to the scene. The fifteen pounds of explosives were located in the Hyundai and secured. The female suspect was arrested and booked for the theft of the Hyundai. The stolen Hyundai was recovered in good condition and was later released to the owners at the scene.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Hyundai Sonata in October 2002 at Scott Hyundai in El Monte, California.
