The owners of a 2000 Mercury Sable contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to report their vehicle was stolen.

The LASD Compton verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Mercury.

A short while later deputies from the LASD Century station picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Mercury with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the deputies tracked the Mercury to a residential street in Compton. The deputies saw the Mercury parked on the street with three occupants. The deputies requested additional deputies and then detained the occupants of the stolen Mercury. The deputies spoke with the female seated in the driver seat. The female said the Mercury belonged to her aunt. The female said she used to have permission to drive the Mercury but no longer had that permission. The female said she took the Mercury while her aunt was at work. The deputies called the victim and provided her with female driver’s name. The victim confirmed it was her niece but said she did not have permission to take her Mercury. The victim told the deputies she desired prosecution of her niece. The deputies arrested the niece and released the other two occupants of the Mercury.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Mercury Sable in June 2001 at Star Lincoln Mercury in Glendale, California.
