The owner of a 2009 BMW 750LI contacted the Philadelphia Police Department to report that they went to the vehicle and started the engine to allow the vehicle to warm up on a cold evening. The BMW owner returned to the vehicle a short time later and discovered that person(s) unknown had stolen the vehicle. The BMW owner called 911 and the Philadelphia Police Radio dispatched an officer to investigate. The officer quickly arrived on location, interviewed the BMW owner and then surveyed the area for the subject vehicle. When the officer was unable to locate the BMW, the officer prepared a stolen vehicle report and arranged for the vehicle information to be entered into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the BMW.

A short while later officers assigned to the Philadelphia PD 14th Police District picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen BMW with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officers tracked the signal to the area of Penn Street in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. The officers observed the BMW which was parked at the curb and cautiously approached same. The officers determined that the BMW was unoccupied and arranged to have same secured for safekeeping. The BMW owner was notified regarding the recovery of the undamaged vehicle and advised regarding the process to retake possession of same.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2009 BMW 750LI in May 2009 at Inskip BMW in Rhode Island.
