The owner of a 2010 Chevrolet Impala 4-door sedan gave the car to their son to drive. The son met up with some women and began driving around. He drove into a gas station at the corner of Pembroke Road and Federal Highway to get some cigarettes. He left the Impala with the two women inside, the keys in the ignition and the motor running. When he came out of the store, he discovered that the Impala was missing. The son contacted the Hallandale Beach Police Department to report that their vehicle stolen.  The police verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Impala.

Later that evening while on routine patrol a Hollywood Police Department officer picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Impala on their on-board LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC).  The officer began tracking the stolen Impala by following the directional and audible cues on their PTC screen. The officer lost the Impala’s signal as it was driving away faster than the officer was traveling. An auto theft task force investigator responded to where the Impala’s signal was last heard. The investigator picked up the signal and began tracking. The investigator located the Impala in a gas station on the northeast corner of North 26th Avenue and Sheridan Street. The investigator “set up” on it and notified the Hollywood PD. Before HPD could arrive, the Impala left the gas station and headed east on Sheridan Street. The investigator attempted to follow the Impala but lost its signal. The investigator regained the signal and advised HPD that the Impala was between North 22nd Avenue and Phippen Road on S.W. 7th Street. The Impala began to travel east on S.W. 7th Street, then north on Phippen passing directly in front of the investigator. The Impala then turned left driving onto S.W. 5th Street. Since the Impala’s location was now in Dania Beach, the investigator contacted the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and advised them of the situation.

Within minutes a squad of deputies arrived and devised a plan to handle the situation. A couple of deputies drove down the street to actually locate the Impala. Shortly thereafter 3 deputies drove east on S.W. 5th Street; 3 deputies drove west on S.W. 5th Street. Upon converging on the Impala, the deputies apprehended 4 subjects, 2 men and 2 women. The Impala was recovered without damage or incident and processed by the deputies. The suspects were transported to the BSO Dania Beach district office for further investigation. The investigation revealed that only one person was involved in the theft and was arrested; the others were released. The Impala was recovered, towed to the police impound yard for safekeeping, and removed from state and federal crime information computer systems.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2010 Chevrolet Impala in November 2011 by Enterprise Lauderdale Lakes in Florida.
