The owners of a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe traveled to the area of South Philadelphia from their residence in Delaware County Pennsylvania. Upon returning to the area where their Hyundai had been parked, they discovered that the vehicle had been stolen. The vehicle owners called 911 and Philadelphia Police Department dispatched an officer from the 3rd District to investigate. The officer quickly arrived on location, interviewed the complainant and searched the area for the stolen Hyundai. When the Hyundai could not be located, the officer prepared a stolen vehicle report and arranged for the stolen vehicle information to be entered into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Hyundai Santa Fe.

Minutes later officers assigned to the Philadelphia PD 12th District picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Hyundai with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft.  Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officers tracked the Hyundai to the area of Shields Street in the southwest section of Philadelphia, where they observed the parked stolen Hyundai. The officers cautiously approached the Hyundai and determined that same was unoccupied. Two detectives assigned to the Philadelphia Police Major Crimes Auto Squad were monitoring stolen vehicle activity in the area and became aware of the Hyundai theft and recovery. The detectives initiated an intense investigation into the incident in an attempt to gain further information. As a result of initial investigation, the detectives suspect that the subject vehicle was in the process of being prepared for shipment out of the country by a professional car theft organization.

The Hyundai has been confiscated for investigation and this incident remains under investigation by the members of the Philadelphia Police Major Crimes Auto Squad.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Hyundai Santa Fe in September 2012 by Hyundai of Turnersville, New Jersey.
