The owner of a local used car lot in Colton, California, contacted the Colton Police Department to report that their vehicle had been stolen sometime during the night from their car lot.

Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Nissan.

A short while later a Canine officer from the West Covina Police Department picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Nissan on his way to work with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft.  Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officer tracked the Nissan from the 210 Freeway and Haven to an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Haven and located the vehicle parked in a stall. The officer requested back up from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Rancho Station and continued with his investigation.  A witness told the officer that a subject had just driven up in the Nissan and entered an apartment.  At that time, a male exited an apartment matching the description given by the witness and was detained.  According to the officer, he was given various versions of how the Nissan got to that location and at that time detained the suspect.  A search of the suspect resulted in the discovery of a “shaved key” commonly used by auto thieves.  Officers from the Colton PD arrived and assumed the investigation, later booking the suspect for vehicle theft.  The undamaged Nissan was subsequently returned to the victim car lot.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Nissan Quest in April 2003 at Metro Nissan in Montclair, California.
