The suspect in this case had originally stolen another vehicle in Sonoma and driven it to Los Angeles. When that car ran out of gas, the thief pulled over and stole a Mercedes 500. Thanks to the LoJack® system installed in the 500, local law enforcement stopped this suspect before he could continue his stealing spree.

On March 5th, 2014, the owners of the Mercedes contacted local police to report the crime. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack device concealed in the 500, which was installed at Downtown Motors in Los Angeles, CA.

A short while later, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s helicopter picked up the homing signals from the stolen car on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The helicopter found the Mercedes traveling on the 605 Freeway and notified the California Highway Patrol.  CHP units caught up to the vehicle and took the suspect into custody. The 500 was retrieved and soon returned to its owners.
