The theft of construction equipment is an all too common event. This is why many companies choose to protect their valuable machines with the LoJack® system, so law enforcement can track their missing assets quickly and safely. In this case, police in California recover a stolen Melroe Bobcat Skid Steer in under a half hour with assistance from LoJack. In addition, they take a suspect into custody and recover several other possibly stolen items as well.

On December 17th, 2013, the construction company reported the crime to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in Lancaster. Deputies verified the theft and entered the equipment information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Skid Steer.

A very short while later, a LASD-Lancaster patrol sergeant picked up the homing signal from the stolen machine on the LoJack tracking computer installed in his patrol units. The sergeant called for backup and tracked the Bobcat to the rear yard of a private residence on Date Ave., where it was hidden under a tarp. A male suspect tried to leave the home in a truck but was stopped and taken into custody. The deputies conducted an investigation at the scene, detaining three additional suspects. At the location the deputies recovered a 2 axle trailer with the VIN# removed, numerous tools and power equipment, and several off road motorcycles and ATVs. The skid steer was retrieved and soon returned to the job site.
