This case involves a John Deere backhoe stolen from a construction site and moved to a commercial storage lot. The site of the machine in that location wouldn’t necessarily attract attention- construction equipment is often stored in this type of area.  The reason that local police were able to retrieve this particular backhoe was its LoJack® system. LoJack gives off a silent homing signal that police followed to find the stolen John Deere quickly and safely.

On November 27th, 2013, the backhoe’s owner contacted the Benicia Police Department to report the crime. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the John Deere.

A short while later, Auto Theft investigators from the San Diego PD picked up the homing signals from the stolen backhoe on the LoJack tracking computer installed in their undercover vehicle.  The Investigators tracked the machine to a commercial storage yard near the U.S./Mexico border. The undamaged John Deere, valued at $20,000, was soon returned to its grateful owners.
