The suspect in this case thought he was being smart by hiding the Dodge Durango he had just stolen in the carport of an apartment complex. Although this maneuver might have thrown off a visual search, this particular SUV was protected by the LoJack® system, allowing police to track down the Durango’s location and arrest the thief.

On November 21st, 2013, the Dodge’s owner contacted the Huntington Beach Police to report the crime. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the Durango, which was installed at Huntington Beach Dodge in Huntington Beach, CA.

A short while later, officers with the Garden Grove PD picked up the homing signals from the stolen SUV with the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles.  A Garden Grove officer picked up the signal in the area of Dale Street and Stanford Avenue, and found the Dodge in the carport of an apartment complex. He arrested the male subject sitting in the vehicle and soon returned the undamaged Durango to its relieved owner.
