When the workers at a construction site in San Joaquin, CA, left their equipment in a fenced yard while they were off, they figured it would be safe. Unfortunately, when they returned to the site 3 days later, a 2012 Caterpillar 420F backhoe was missing. The machine was not missing for long thanks to the LoJack® system hidden inside, which helped local police recover the backhoe in less than one hour after activation.

On November 22nd, 2013, the Caterpillar’s owner contacted the San Joaquin Sheriff’s Department. A theft report was completed and equipment information was entered into the California Stolen Vehicle System as well as the NCIC national system. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the backhoe.

A very short while later, officers with the San Joaquin Sheriff’s Department and the Delta RATT (Regional Auto Theft Task Force) both began to receive the homing signal from the stolen machine on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The officers located the Caterpillar hidden behind a motel near the intersection of Hwy 99 and Yosemite Rd. The backhoe, valued at $100,000, was soon returned to the very grateful construction company.
