In this case, Sacramento, CA police are assisted by the LoJack® system when investigating the carjacking of a Toyota 4-Runner. When officers, using LoJack, recover the SUV in just 10 minutes, they discover that there was a lot more to this incident than what was initially reported.

On November 11th, 2013, the Toyota’s owner contacted the Sacramento Police and reported his vehicle was stolen at gunpoint. Officers responded and were met by the owner and another victim who was planning to buy the vehicle. The two met up in a parking lot for the transaction and were accosted by an armed suspect who took the 4-Runner and the $7000 cash from the intended buyer. Police entered the vehicle information into the California Stolen Vehicle System as well as the NCIC national system. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the SUV, which was installed at Penske Toyota in Downey, CA.

Less than 10 minutes later, officers with the Sacramento PD began to receive the homing signal from the stolen car on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The officers tracked and located the Toyota in the rear yard of a residence. The owner of the residence was the cousin of the person reporting the vehicle theft. The SUV’s owner arrived at the location. Investigation revealed that the two had set up the ‘carjacking’ and both, along with a female ‘getaway driver’, were arrested. The cash was returned to the innocent person who was ‘buying’ the 4-Runner.
