The owner of the Mitsubishi Generator in this case got a terrible shock when returning to his job site one Thursday after lunch. He discovered thieves had cut the lock on his fenced-in site and stolen his machine. The LoJack® system he had installed on his equipment proved to be a good investment. It assisted local police in recovering the generator in just over three hours after activation.

On October 17th, 2013, the Mitsubishi’s owner reported the crime to the Manteca, CA Police Department. The generator information was entered into the California Stolen Vehicle System as well as the NCIC national system. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the generator.

A short while later, officers with the Stockton PD received the homing signal from the stolen machine on the LoJack tracking computer installed in their patrol vehicle. The officers tracked the signal to a large industrial complex on Charter Way. It appeared the signal was coming from inside a closed business. The officers then called the DELTA RATT auto theft task force for assistance. Investigators entered the business and found the Mitsubishi inside with all identifying decals and VIN plates removed. Someone also spray painted “Lot 1345” on the generator to make it appear it was purchased at an equipment auction. These tactics might have disrupted a visual search, but not the LoJack system. The recovered generator, valued at $10,500, was soon returned to its grateful owner.
