When thieves steal a car, truck, van or motorcycle, they will often use some kind of subterfuge to avoid being apprehended, such as hiding the vehicle in a closed building or dense woods, covering it with a tarp, or changing the license plates. These methods would stop a visual search, but not the LoJack® system, which sends a silent signal to tracking computers installed on police vehicles. In this case, a Toyota Tacoma that was stolen one Thursday afternoon is tracked down by law enforcement in just over an hour after activation.

On September 19th, 2013, the Toyota’s owners contacted the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department- Pico Rivera Station to report their vehicle stolen. Deputies verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the Tacoma, which was installed at Toyota of Temecula Valley in Temecula, CA.

A short time later, officers with the Anaheim PD picked up the homing signals from the stolen truck with the LoJack tracking computer installed in their patrol vehicles. The officers located the Toyota moving in the area of Katella and Euclid Street. The license plate had been changed, which might have halted a visual search, but not the signal from the LoJack unit. The driver pulled into a strip mall where she was detained along with her two passengers. The suspect was arrested and the Tacoma was soon returned to its relieved owner.
