Many companies who either operate or lease construction equipment choose to protect their assets with the LoJack® system. Construction sites are often difficult to secure, and are usually left unpopulated when the workers are off shift. The owners of the 2012 Toyota Forklift in this case were glad they chose to install LoJack, because when it was stolen, the police were able to recover the machine, despite the thief’s best efforts to hide it.

On August 9th, 2013, the Toyota’s owner contacted Fontana Police to report the crime. Fontana Auto Theft detectives verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack device concealed in the machine.

A short while later, Fontana PD officers picked up the homing signal on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. They tracked the forklift’s signal to a pallet business on Banana Street, where the stolen equipment was found buried under a pile of pallets. The employee onsite, who was also the son of the owner, gave police some misleading and false information and was soon taken into custody. The undamaged Toyota, with an approximate value of $23,000, was soon returned to its grateful owners.
