In this case, a Mercedes Benz C230 is purchased with a fraudulent check from an Illinois bank using a stolen identity from Washington State. The day after the car was stolen, it was recovered by several law enforcement branches, assisted by the LoJack® system, over 3,000 miles away in California.

On August 22nd, 2013, the Bloomington, IL bank called the State and Local Auto Theft Enforcement Task Force (SLATE) to report the crime. Officers verified the theft and entered the Benz’s information into local and federal crime computers. The LoJack device, which was installed at Mercedes Benz of Laguna Niguel, CA, was then automatically activated.

A short while later, numerous California police departments including Beverly Hills PD, Lakewood PD, and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department received the homing signal from the stolen Mercedes on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their vehicles. They began tracking the vehicle, finally locating it in Downey, where it was found parked and unoccupied. The dealership was thrilled to get the C230 back in its possession.
