A cautious car thief without a driver’s license asked his friend to drive the Dodge Intrepid he had just stolen in this case. Luckily, the owners of the car were cautious as well- they had the LoJack® system installed when they purchased their Intrepid- so local police could track the vehicle down and take both suspects into custody.

On July 26th, 2013, the Dodge’s owners contacted El Monte, CA Police to report their vehicle had been stolen. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. The LoJack unit concealed in the vehicle, which was installed at Nelson Dodge in El Monte, CA, was then automatically activated.

A short while later, LASD-East LA deputies received the homing signal from the stolen car on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The deputies requested ground and air assistance as they began to track the Dodge traveling on the 710 freeway. The driver claimed he had been asked to take the wheel by the passenger, who did not have a valid driver’s license and was currently on parole. Both were taken into custody without further incident. The undamaged Intrepid was soon returned to its grateful owner.
