This case involves the theft of a UTV from a job site in Sacramento, CA. A UTV, or utility vehicle, is used to travel over rough terrain and can also haul containers and trailers. A machine that’s so versatile is very necessary in construction work, which is why the companies who rent them out often install the LoJack® system to help police make a speedy recovery when they are stolen.

On July 29th, 2013, California Highway Patrol was contacted about a 2013 John Deere Gator that was stolen from a job site in south Sacramento, CA. Officers verified the theft and entered the UTV’s information into the California Stolen Vehicle System as well as the NCIC national system. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the Gator, which was installed at a large national equipment rental company.

A very short time later, deputies with the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department began to receive the homing signal from the Gator on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The deputies located the John Deere abandoned in a field. The UTV, valued at approximately $8,500, was soon returned to the job site.
