It’s every auto seller’s worst nightmare- a customer takes a vehicle for a test drive and doesn’t return. A used car dealer in Sacramento, CA had this experience recently, but had one advantage- there was a LoJack® system installed in the stolen BMW X5, so local law enforcement tracked it down in just 10 minutes after activation.

The dealership called Sacramento Police to report the incident. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the California Stolen Vehicle System as well as the national system, NCIC. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the vehicle, which was installed at New Century BMW in Alhambra, CA.

Just a few minutes later, officers with the Sacramento Police began to receive the homing signal from the BMW on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The officers located the vehicle being driven in the Land Park area of Sacramento. They stopped the X5 and took the driver, who was already on probation for auto theft, into custody. The BMW was soon returned to the relieved dealership.
