This case involves some highly valued construction equipment stolen from a company whose business depends upon having their machines available to work. It’s a good thing there was a LoJack® unit on their 2013 Melroe Mini Track Skid Steer, so local law enforcement could track it down only 35 minutes after activation.

On May 24th, 2013,   the Skid Steer’s owner contacted the Henderson, Nevada police to report that their machine was stolen. Also stolen at the same time was a 2013 Melroe Mini Excavator and miscellaneous other equipment.  Henderson PD verified the theft and they entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the Skid Steer, which was installed at a large national equipment rental company.

A very short time later, San Bernardino County, CA Sheriff’s Department Flight Deputies on a helicopter in Hesperia picked up the Melroe’s homing signal on their on-board LoJack tracking computer. The flight crew notified Hesperia Sheriff’s ground units and tracked the Skid Steer to a residence on Fir Street, where both pieces of equipment were in the rear yard. The male resident had purchased them knowing they were stolen. He was taken into custody.  Both the Skid Steer and the Mini Excavator, with a total estimated value of $30,000, were soon returned to their very relieved owners.
