When a business that leases vehicles doesn’t get a rental unit returned on time, it’s not only concern for their missing property that worries management, but also the loss of income and the inconvenience to customers who aren’t able to utilize the machine they planned to rent. The retailer in this next case, like so many others in the same field, had the LoJack® system installed on its rental vehicles so, if any are stolen, law enforcement can retrieve them quickly and the business can keep operating.

On May 13th, 2013, a Sunrise, FL home improvement store rented a 2008 Ford Econoline van to a customer for 75 minutes. When the van was not returned on time, the store manager contacted Sunrise PD to report the theft. The responding officer entered the vehicle’s information into the state and federal crime computers. This automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the van.

A short while later, members of the Auto Theft Task Force picked up the homing signal from the stolen van on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. Shortly thereafter a Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputy picked up the signal as well. The deputy observed the Ford exit the expressway and head south on Coral Ridge Drive. He called for backup from his fellow deputies and the Coral Springs PD. The Econoline was stopped and the driver arrested. The van was recovered and soon returned to the relieved staff at the home improvement store.
