This case is pretty amazing for a couple of reasons. One is that the theft was not noticed for three weeks, and the other is that, even with such a delay, the machinery was recovered in four minutes!

On May 1st, 2013, the owner of a 2010 John Deere Skid Steer contacted the Los Angeles Police Department-West Los Angeles Division to report that it was stolen from a job site. It had been gone for over three weeks. The victim provided the officers with the name of a possible suspect.

LAPD verified the theft and entered the equipment information into their state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the John Deere, which was installed at Coastline Equipment in Long Beach, CA.

Just a few minutes later, LAPD-Foothill Division patrol officers picked up the homing signal from the stolen skid steer on the LoJack tracking computer installed in their patrol unit. The officers tracked the signal to a business in Montague. The John Deere was located and a suspect was taken into custody. The skid steer, valued at $50,000, was soon returned to its grateful owner.
