One of the most exciting features of the LoJack® system is that the tracking computers don’t just work in police vehicles on the ground- they are also effective in police aircraft like helicopters. Often ground and air units combine forces to track down stolen vehicles efficiently and safely.

On the morning of April 12th, 2013, the owner of a Ford Econoline Work Van awoke to discover that his vehicle had been stolen from in front of his home in San Francisco.  San Francisco Police verified the crime information and entered the vehicle information into their state and federal crime computers. The LoJack unit in the van, which was installed at Melody Toyota in San Bruno, CA, was automatically activated.

A short while later, San Francisco PD officers picked up the homing signals from the stolen van with the LoJack tracking computers installed in their police vehicles. The officers determined that the stolen van was being driven at high speeds and asked for a CHP Aviation Helicopter to assist.  The helicopter finally located the Econoline in the Bayview area of SF, parked on the street abandoned.  The undamaged vehicle was soon returned to its owner.
