Philadelphia Police Recover Stolen Saturn SL, Parked and Abandoned

On Tuesday, May 15, 2012, the owner of a 1998 Saturn SL discovered the vehicle missing from a parking space in Northwest Philadelphia. The owner called 911 and Philadelphia Police Radio dispatched a 14th District Officer to investigate the incident. The officer arrived on location, interviewed the complainant and surveyed the area for the vehicle. When the vehicle could not be located, the officer prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the Saturn’s information entered into the state and federal crime computer systems. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed within the Saturn, prompting it to begin emitting a silent homing signal.

A short time later, officers with the Philadelphia Police Department began to pick up the Saturn’s homing signal on the Police Tracking Computer (PTC) installed in their patrol vehicle. Following the directional cues on the PTC, the officers tracked the Saturn to the area of 3100 Morse Street. There, they located the parked vehicle. The officers cautiously approached the Saturn and determined that the vehicle was unoccupied. The Saturn was confiscated for safekeeping until the owner could be notified.
