Perth Amboy Police Quickly Locate Stolen Toyota 4-Runner, Arrest One Suspect

On January 29, 2012, the owner of a 1999 Toyota 4-Runner reported the vehicle stolen to the Perth Amboy Police Department. Perth Amboy Police completed a stolen vehicle report and had the Toyota’s information entered into the New Jersey and federal crime computer systems – a routine police action that automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed within the Toyota 4-Runner.
A short while later, officers with both the Sayreville and Perth Amboy Police Departments picked up the Toyota’s silent LoJack signal on their patrol car’s LoJack Police Tracking Computer. Following the directional and signal strength cues on the tracking computer, the officers located the vehicle at a residence on State Street in Perth Amboy. The officers noted that the engine was running, and set up surveillance on the Toyota with the hope that someone would return for the vehicle. As the police waited, they observed a male suspect enter the vehicle and attempt to drive it away. The police immediately converged upon the vehicle, arrested the suspect, and recovered the Toyota 4-Runner.
