Three on Felony Probation Arrested for Theft of Honda Civic in California

On the morning of March 26, 2012, the owner of a 1992 Honda Civic walked out of his driveway to get into his vehicle, and discovered that it had been stolen sometime during the previous night. The victim contacted the Citrus Heights Police Department; the responding officer completed a stolen vehicle report and had the Honda’s information entered into the California and federal police crime computer systems. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Honda.
Later that afternoon, Citrus Heights officers on patrol began to receive the Honda’s silent signal on their patrol car’s LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC). The officers followed the directional and signal strength cues from their PTC and quickly located the vehicle inside a residential garage, with the door halfway open. The officers approached the residence and identified three suspects at the residence. After questioning the suspect and observing the Honda’s tires lying on the ground, the officers arrested the suspects for auto theft and receiving stolen property. Two of the suspects had prior arrests and were on felony probation.
The victim was contacted and responded to the location. He was able to put the tires back on the Honda and drove the vehicle home. The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Honda in 1997 by a previous owner; the victim was unaware that the vehicle was equipped with LoJack, but was very thankful that it was.
