Nissan Quest Left Running in Driveway in LA is Stolen, Two Arrested After High-Risk Traffic Stop

On the morning of February 23, 2012, the owner of a 2001 Nissan Quest left her vehicle running in her driveway, where it was stolen. She immediately contacted the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Division to report the theft.
After the police gathered all of the pertinent information for a vehicle theft report, they had the information entered into the state and federal crime computer databases. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle. Neither the owners nor law enforcement had to do anything else to activate the LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery Network, because LoJack’s interface with law enforcement is seamless.
Less than two hours later, a LA Port Police officer began to pick up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Quest. Following the directional signals on his LoJack Police Tracking Computer, the officer tracked the signal to the area of C Street and Avalon Boulevard, where he observed one female suspect driving the stolen vehicle along with one male passenger. When requested back-up units arrived, the officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop, taking the suspects into custody.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the victim had left her vehicle running in her driveway just as the two suspects were walking by. The male suspect admitted stealing the vehicle and then allowing the female to drive the vehicle. The male suspect was arrested for Grand Theft Auto and the female suspect was arrested for Driving Without Owner’s Consent. Harbor Detectives are conducting the follow-up investigation.
