Suspect Arrested After Chase for Theft of Honda Accord — Found with Shaved Key to the Vehicle

In the early morning hours of January 6, 2012, the owner of a 1992 Honda Accord discovered that her vehicle had been stolen and immediately reported the theft to the National City Police Department.
National City Police prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the stolen Honda’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Honda and initiated the tracking of the vehicle.
Less than 30 minutes later, ground units from the San Diego Police Department began to pick up the silen LoJack homing signals from the stolen Honda Accord on the LoJack Police Tracking Computer installed in their patrol car. Following the computer’s cues, the officers tracked and located the stolen vehicle, parked in the west alley of Marlborough Street. The officers observed a male suspect run from the vehicle; they pursued him on foot, caught and arrested him. During a search of the suspect and area, the officers also located a shaved Honda key that started the stolen Accord. The suspect was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle. The stolen Honda, which had sustained only minor damage, was stored pending return to the victim.
The LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System was installed in this Honda Accord 14 years ago, in November 1997.
