Riverside Sheriff’s Deputies Locate Undamaged Stolen Toyota Camry, Detain 4 Juvenile Suspects

On December 28, 2011, a deputy from the Riverside Sheriff’s Office Jurupa Station was traveling on the 91 Freeway at University Avenue, in the City of Riverside when he began to pick up a silent LoJack homing signal on the LoJack Police Tracking Computer in his patrol vehicle. When he queried the signal code with the national stolen vehicle database, he was informed that he was tracking a 2009 Toyota Camry that was reported stolen to the City of Riverside just ten minutes earlier.
The deputy initiated a LoJack stolen vehicle broadcast and requested assistance from additional units in the area. He exited the freeway and began tracking the moving signal eastbound on Mission Avenue. He quickly isolated the signal at Market and 12th Streets, where he lcoated the stolen Camry, occupied by four male suspects. As the deputy attempted a vehicle stop, the driver accelerated and fled. Knowing that there were additional back-up units converging on the area, the deputy followed at a safe distance until sufficient units were present. A felony vehicle stop was finally made at Brockton and Locust, where the suspects (all juveniles) were taken into custody without further incident. The driver was arrested for Auto Theft, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Felony Evading. The three others were detained, questioned for Possession of Stolen property and subsequently released to parents or guardians. The undamaged vehicle was returned to the owner.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Toyota Camry at Toyota of Riverside on June 6, 2008.
