Car Thief Arrested in Los Angeles for Stealing His Friend's Infiniti I30

On January 7, 2012, the owner of a 1998 Infiniti I30 contacted the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) 77th Street Division to report the vehicle stolen.
The reporting officer responded to the scene, prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the stolen Infiniti’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Infiniti and initiated the tracking of the vehicle.
Twelve minutes later, LAPD’s 77th Street Division officers picked up the silent LoJack signal from the Infiniti I30 on the LoJack Police Tracking Computer in their patrol vehicle. The officers observed the vehicle at Manchester and Hoover, exiting a gas station. The officers requested back-up, and when it arrived, they conducted a high-risk traffic stop, taking a male suspect driver and a female suspect passenger into custody. The male suspect admitted knowing the victim and to taking the victim’s vehicle. The female passenger was questioned and released. The male suspect was arrested for Driving Without Owner’s Consent. 77th Street Detectives are conducting the follow-up investigation.
