Dodge Challenger Stolen from Nightclub in Oakland Recovered, Abandoned, Two Hours Later

On the evening of February 5, 2012, the owner of a 2010 Dodge Challenger was at a nightclub in Oakland California. When she left the club later that night, she discovered that someone had stolen the car keys from her jacket pocket, along with her car. She reported the theft to an Oakland Police Department officer who was just outside of the club.
The officer completed a stolen vehicle report and had the Challenger’s VIN entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Challenger and initiated the tracking of the vehicle.
Approximately two hours later — at 4AM — Richmond Police Department officers began to pick up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Challenger on the LoJack Police Tracking Computer in their patrol vehicle. Following the computer’s cues, the officers quickly tracked and located the abandoned vehicle in outer Richmond. The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping and the owner notified of its recovery.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Dodge Challenger on September 21, 2011.
