Long Beach Police Conduct High-Risk Traffic Stop — Recover Stolen Toyota Camry and Arrest One Suspect

On the afternoon of January 9, 2012, the owners of a 1994 Toyota Camry contacted the Long Beach Police Department to report the vehicle stolen.
The reporting officer responded to the scene, prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the stolen Camry’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Toyota and initiated the tracking of the vehicle.
Five minutes later, Long Beach Police Department officers picked up the LoJack signal from the stolen Camry on the Police Tracking Computers in their patrol vehicles. Following the computer’s cues, the officers tracked the signal to 56st Street and Locust, where they observed one male suspect driving the stolen vehicle. When requested back-up units arrived, they conducted a high-risk traffic stop, and took the single suspect into custody. The suspect told the officers that he’d bought the vehicle from a friend for $350.00. The suspect was arrested for Grand Theft Auto and a probation violation. Long Beach Detectives are conducting the follow-up investigation.
