When the LoJack® system is activated on a stolen car, truck, van, motorcycle or piece of construction equipment, the homing signal works in every area LoJack covers, so whether the machine is 10 miles away, or moved out of state, the signal will still be received by the local police. In this case, a 2008 Caterpillar Skid Steer stolen in Maryland is recovered in New York.

On June 18th, 2013, the skid steer’s owner contacted the Montgomery County, MD Police to report that his machine had been stolen from storage on his job site.  Officers verified the theft and entered the Caterpillar’s information into the Maryland State Police Computer stolen vehicle computer as well as the NCIC national stolen vehicle computer. The LoJack unit on the tractor was then automatically activated.

A short time later, officers from both New Jersey and the NYPD picked up the homing signal from the stolen tractor on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. Officers from the NYPD 123rd precinct tracked the signal to a residential area, and found the skid steer in the yard of a private residence. The stolen machine was being loaded onto a transport trailer. The police quickly moved in and arrested two suspects.

The owner of the construction company was notified and he was elated that his machine was recovered undamaged. He was shocked that it was recovered so far away, and he realized if it wasn’t for his machine being equipped with LoJack, it would probably never have been recovered.
