CHP Officers Apprehend Suspect After Chase, Recover Stolen Chevrolet Malibu

On January 10, 2012, the owner of a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu contacted the La Verne Police Department to report the vehicle stolen.
The La Verne Police responded to the scene, prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the stolen Malibu’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Malibu and initiated the tracking of the vehicle.
Less than an hour later, officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Santa Fe Springs, were on routine patrol when they received the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Malibu on the LoJack Police Tracking Computer installed in their patrol car. Following the computer cues, the officers tracked the vehicle to a residential area in the Carson/Lakewood cities. One of the officers located the vehicle, parked and occupied on a residential street. When the suspect spotted the CHP officer, he jumped from the car and fled over a fence. Assisting units responded to the area and established a perimeter, and the suspect was quickly taken into custody without further incident. The suspect was later found to have been recently released from jail and had a stolen vehicle history. He was booked for Driving Without Owner’s Consent. The vehicle was stored for safekeeping and was undamaged.
The LoJack Vehicle Recovery System was installed in the Chevrolet Malibu at the owner’s request at Rotolo Chevrolet in April 2003.
