LoJack Early Warning System Alerts Owner to Theft of Toyota Camry, Quickly Recovered by NYPD

On September 20, 2012, the owner of a 2007 Toyota Camry received an Early Warning notification from his LoJack Vehicle Recovery System, alerting him that the vehicle had been moved without his authorization. The owner quickly contacted the New York Police Department’s 49th Precinct to report the vehicle stolen.

NYPD officers verified the theft and entered the Toyota’s information into the state and federal crime computers (NYSPIN/ NCIC), which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

Minutes later, officers from the NYPD’s 45th Precinct, located in the Bronx, picked up the silent LoJack homing signals from the stolen Toyota on the Police Tracking Computers installed in their patrol vehicles. Following the directional and audible cues from the LoJack computers, the officers tracked the vehicle to a commercial yard on Roberts Avenue in the Bronx’s 45th Precinct. Officers conducted surveillance on the vehicle, but were unable to locate any suspects. The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping and eventually released to a happy owner.
