LoJack Helps LAPD Air & Ground Officers Recover Stolen Land Rover, 3 Suspects Arrested

On August 8, 2012, the owners of a 2003 Land Rover contacted the Los Angeles Police Department’s Topanga Division to report that their vehicle was stolen. LAPD verified the theft and entered the Land Rover’s information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

A short while later, patrol officers with the LAPD-North Hollywood Division and their field supervisor, picked up the silent LoJack homing signal from the stolen Land Rover on the Police Tracking Computers installed in their patrol cars. LAPD “Air 10” officers also responded, and tollowing the directional and signal strength cues on the LoJack computers, were able to locate the vehicle traveling southbound on Cahuenga Avenue at Magnolia Boulevard. There, the vehicle stopped in a liquor store parking lot, and one suspect entered the store. The patrol officers conducted an investigation and took three suspects – including two inside the vehicle – into custody on auto theft-related charges without incident. Investigation revealed that the vehicle was cold-plated and VIN-switched. The vehicle, valued at $17,000, was recovered and impounded for further investigation. Detectives from LA County TRAP are handling the investigation.
