Philadelphia Police Recover Stolen Nissan Maxima Minutes After Theft is Reported

On Thursday June 14, 2012, the owner of a Nisan Maxima from New Castle Delaware was visiting Philadelphia. That morning, the owner discovered that the vehicle had been stolen from the 1900 block of Ruffner in northwest Philadelphia. The owner call 911 and the Philadelphia Police Radio dispatched an officer to investigate. After verifying the theft, Philadelphia police entered the Nissan’s information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

Minutes later, investigators from the Philadelphia Police Major Crimes Auto Squad intercepted the silent LoJack homing signals from the stolen Nissan on the Police Tracking Computer installed in their unmarked police vehicle. Following the directional and audible cues from the LoJack computer, the investigators tracked the vehicle to the area of 3rd Street. Investigators placed the vehicle under surveillance. After a period of time with no activity, the vehicle was confiscated and towed to Major Crimes Headquarters to be processed for physical evidence. This incident remains under investigation by the members of the Philadelphia Police Major Crimes Auto Squad.
