In the early morning hours of May 14, 2012, the owner of a 2004 Mercedes CLK320 was robbed and his vehicle stolen. The owner quickly reported the theft to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southwest Division. The LAPD officers verified the theft and entered the Mercedes’ information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the vehicle.

A short while later, LAPD Air-18 and LAPD Air-16 flight officers picked up the LoJack signal from the stolen Mercedes on the Police Tracking Computers installed in their aircrafts. Following the directional and audible cues from the LoJack computers, the officers tracked the vehicle to 39th and Buckingham Streets. There, they observed a male suspect driving the vehicle. When requested back-up units arrived, the police conducted a high-risk traffic stop and took the suspect into custody. The victim was transported to the officer’s location and positively identified the suspect. The suspect was arrested for carjacking. Southwest Detectives are conducting the follow-up investigation.
