Stolen Honda Accord Quickly Recovered Thanks to 17-Year Old LoJack System

On April 18, 2012, Rialto Police Department officers were traveling northbound on Riverside Avenue just north of Valley Boulevard, when they picked up a silent LoJack homing signal on their patrol car’s LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC). After querying the “Reply Code” appearing on the PTC against the police stolen vehicle database, they were informed that the signal was emitting from a 1993 Honda Accord reported stolen thirty minutes earlier to the Ontario Police Department.
Following the directional and signal strength cues on the PTC, the Rialto officers tracked the vehicle north of their location, where they observed the Honda pass right by them, heading southbound. The officers turned around and followed the stolen vehicle, which was occupied by a male driver and two female passengers. The driver turned into a shopping center and proceeded to a fast food restaurant. With assistance of other responding patrol units, the officers converged upon the suspects, and took all three into custody.
The male driver admitted to stealing the vehicle after he saw it parked on the street with the keys in the ignition. He was arrested for Auto Theft and Possession of a Stolen Vehicle. The female passengers (his girlfriend and mother) were questioned and released. The undamaged vehicle was towed and stored and later released to the victim, was unaware that the vehicle that the vehicle was equipped with LoJack.
