The owners of a 2002 Toyota 4Runner contacted the Santa Cruz Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen. The victims parked the Toyota in their apartment parking lot and when they returned the vehicle was missing.

The Santa Cruz PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Toyota.

A short while later officers from the San Francisco Police Department and the Burlingame Police Department picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Toyota with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officers tracked the Toyota to the area of Gar and Taylor Streets in San Francisco. The Toyota was parked on the street with two male suspects inside. The officers approached and detained both suspects. As the officers approached they observed the driver injecting a substance believed to be Heroin into his arm. Both suspects were arrested for narcotics violations and the driver was arrested for auto theft.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Toyota 4Runner in June 2002 at Fletcher Jones Toyota in Las Vegas, Nevada.
