The owners of a 1995 Ford Econoline contacted the Los Angeles Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen.  Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Ford Econoline.

A short while later the LAPD Air-3 flight officers picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Ford with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft.  Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the air unit tracked the Ford to the 600 block of 101St where they located the van and observed a male exiting the van.  Officers from the LAPD Southeast Division assigned to Southeast Robbery detail responded and detained the suspect.  The field investigation led to the identification of the suspect by witnesses who had seen him drive up in the van.  The suspect admitted to the officers that he had stolen the van using “shaved keys” commonly used by car thieves.  The officers arrested the suspect and later booked him for driving a motor vehicle without owner’s permission, a felony.  The victim responded to the scene and the undamaged Ford was released to him.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Ford Econoline in November 1994 via Direct Sales in Los Angeles, California.
