The owner of a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu contacted the Miami-Dade Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen. The owner explained to the responding officer that he was carrying boxes out of their home to their Malibu. The owner had left the keys in the Malibu and the motor running while doing this. When the owner returned to their Malibu on one of the trips, they discovered the car missing. The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report, theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime information computers.

A short while later a Miami-Dade PD auto theft detective picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Malibu on their on-board LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC). The auto theft detective began tracking the stolen Malibu by following the directional and audible cues on the PTC screen. The auto theft detective, along with their backup, located the Malibu parked with the engine running on the southeast corner of Northeast 60th Terrace and North Miami Avenue. The detectives approached the Malibu and discovered it occupied by a subject, who was sleeping. The detectives woke the subject and took him into custody. After being transported to the Northside District station, the suspect was given his rights and was interviewed. The suspect was charged with Grand Theft Auto and an open bench warrant. The Malibu was recovered, towed to the police impound yard for safekeeping and removed from state and federal crime information computer systems.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu in December 2009 by Maroone Chevy of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
