LoJack® System Helps Chicago Police Department Recover Stolen Jeep Cherokee

The owners of a Jeep Grand Cherokee contacted the Chicago Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen from in front of their residence on the 1800 block of N Mayfield Avenue in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood. The Chicago PD responded to the scene and after verifying facts as presented entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Jeep.
Minutes later officers from the Illinois State Police and the Chicago PD picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Jeep with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. The Illinois State Police tracked the Jeep to the 1000 block of Humphrey Ave in Oak Park, Illinois, where they were shortly joined by Chicago PD who were also tracking the stolen Jeep. The Jeep was recovered unoccupied on scene, police investigation into this theft and recovery continues.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee was recovered less than an hour after it was reported stolen but had already been partially stripped. The ignition had been pulled and the Jeep showed signs of front and rear end damage. It is believed the Jeep would have been totally stripped if not for the quick recovery. The Jeep was returned to a grateful owner before it could be further damaged.
The LoJack® System was installed in the Jeep Grand Cherokee in May 1998 at Garden Auto in New Jersey.
